Echo is a 2023 Disney+ TV series from Marvel Studios spinning off from the Hawkeye series and based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name.
The show is in development with Etan Cohen and Emily Cohen writing and executive producing.
Alaqua Cox is reprising the title role of Maya Lopez, aka Echo, which she originated in the Hawkeye series.
The series also stars Chaske Spencer (Wild Indian), Tantoo Cardinal (Stumptown), Devery Jacobs (Reservation Dogs) and Cody Lightning (Hey, Viktor!), with Graham Greene (1883) and Zahn McClarnon (Reservation Dogs)."
Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio are also confirmed to be reprising their roles as Daredevil and Kingpin on the series.
The official summary promises that the series revisits Maya Lopez, whose ruthless behavior in New York City catches up with her in her hometown. She must face her past, reconnect with her Native American roots and embrace the meaning of family and community if she ever hopes to move forward.
Episodes of the series are directed by Sydney Freeland (Reservation Dogs) and Catriona McKenzie (Gunaikurnai). Executive producers are Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum, Stephen Broussard, Richie Palmer, Marion Dayre, and Jason Gavin (Blackfeet). Co-executive producers are Amy Rardin, Sydney Freeland, Christina King (Seminole), and Jennifer Booth.
The Maya Lopez character was created by writer/artist David Mack in the pages of Daredevil. She's Native American, deaf and has the gift of being able to mimic the moves and abilities of any skilled person, including trained fighters, after only observing them in action. This made her a formidable foe for Daredevil, matching his moves in battles. Her mission of vengeance against Daredevil was fueled by the lie that the hero murdered her father, a lie sold to her by her surrogate uncle Wilson Fisk (The Kingpin). Eventually she learns the truth and shifts to an ally/hero role. She was later tasked with a secret mission by The Avengers and took on the armored identity of "Ronin." Fans saw Ronin in action in Avengers: Endgame, except there it was Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye in the suit.
The Hawkeye TV series reversed the Ronin connection but made use of the misplaced vengeance theme, and excited fans when it introduced D'Onofrio's Kingpin into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That series ended with Echo discovering that Fisk' is actually responsible for her father's death, a thread that will likely continue in this show.
Marvel Studios have revealed release dates for Loki and Echo at the Disney Upfront presentation today.
