James Gunn Writing Superman Reboot Project

Filmmaker James Gunn, co-chair of the newly-formed DC Studios took to social media last night to drop another bombshell on fans.

He is writing the script for a new Superman movie. Bundled with the news was the revelation that actor Henry Cavill will not be in the lead role.

Gunn writes, "our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman's life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill."

Gunn went on to say that they hope to keep Cavill involved in their projects, but in what capacity is not clear.

Cavill is Not Returning to Superman After All

It's been a rough year for fans of DC Comics films, with the newly merged Warner Bros Discovery making one controversial move after another.

Henry Cavill is the latest egg to break in the omelette that is the newly-formed DC Studios.

Fans will recall that, back in October, in the wake of his cameo in Black Adam, Cavill announced on social media that he is returning to the role of Superman for what we assumed would be Man of Steel 2.

Late last night, the actor took to social media again, this time to walk back the previous news.

"I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it's sad news, everyone," Cavill writes. "I will, after all, not be returning as Superman."

Cavill confirms that WBD encouraged him to make the October announcement, which came before the new DC Studios was formed.

The actor expressed no bitterness around the decision or the way things were handled. "That's life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes."

Cavill's complete statement is below.
