Updated 5:30pm PT: Sony punctuated their announcement with a teaser video, unveiling the logo treatment for the new title.
Venom 2 is now being called Venom: Let There Be Carnage by Sony Pictures. The news come bundled with the expected reports that the sequel's release date has been pushed back due to industry-wide disruptions in film production and distribution. According to a report by Deadline, the movie is now set for June 25, 2021.
The announcement is not surprising as Sony announced a number of schedule shuffles just a few weeks ago, including it's other Spider-Man spinoff, Moribus. With Venom 2 in mid-production when the Covid-19 pandemic shut down the industry, it seemed doubtful the studio could deliver in October as planned.
Venom: Let There be Carnage is Sony Pictures Entertainment's the 2021 sequel to the 2018 box-office hit Venom, both based on the the Marvel Comics character.
Tom Hardy returns as Eddie Brock, the guerrilla journalist who has bonded with the alien symbiote giving him a monstrous alter-ego call Venom. As was teased in the original film, Woody Harrelson is on board to play Cletus Kasady, a serial killer who also bonds with a symbiote and becomes the even-more-dangerous villain Carnage. Naomie Harris also stars as a woman confined to the Ravencroft institute who likely becomes the symbiote villain Shriek. Michelle Williams also stars.
Andy Serkis is directing from a script by Kelly Marcel, who co-wrote the original.
