The Spider-Man spinoff Morbius is the latest movie to feel the bite of Covid-19, with Sony Pictures announcing the that the film will not be released on July 31 as previously intended. The film is now slated to bow March 19, 2021, according to a report by Deadline. The film is just the latest of an across-the-board reshuffling of the deck in the light of production halts and theater closings that are causing massive disruption in the entertainment industry.
Comic movies already affected are Warner Bros' Wonder Woman 1984, which is rescheduled for August 14th as well as Marvel's Black Widow and 20th Century Studios' The New Mutants, which have not been assigned new dates yet.
The Deadline article details a complete rescheduling of the 2020 slate for Sony, which includes schedule changes for Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Greyhound, Fatherhood, Uncharted and Peter Rabbit 2. Strangely missing from the studios' announcements is Venom 2, which was in production when the pandemic lockdown started and was due out in October of this year. We can only assume that the Spidey Symbiote sequel will also move to 2021.
Morbius is a Sony Pictures Entertainment feature film based on the Marvel Comics Spider-Man villain of the same name. Jared Leto stars as Michael Morbius, a scientist studying blood disease who accidentally infects himself with a custom illness. Now he's averse to sunlight, has superhuman strength and an unquenchable thirst for blood. Unlike the undead such as Dracula, Morbius is living vampire, born of science not supernature.
Doctor Who alum Matt Smith plays the film's villain Loxias Crown (aka Hunger). Adria Arjona and Jared Harris are also among the cast.
Morbius is directed by Daniel Espinosa (Life, Easy Money) from a script by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (Power Rangers, Gods of Egypt).
