20th Century Studios / Disney is not backing down from plans to release The New Mutants in actual movie theaters on August 28th. The latest indicator is the unveiling of an IMAX poster for the film today on twitter.
The film has a famously troubled history with regards to its release, having been delayed multiple times from its originally-announced date of April 2018. With a huge portion of the US movie theaters in lockdown, fans have been skeptical that the upcoming August date would hold.
The New Mutants is directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in our Stars) from a script he co-wrote with Knate Lee, both self-described fans of the comics.
The cast includes Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik, Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane, Charlie Heaton as Cannonball, Henry Zaga as Sunspot, Blu Hunt as Mirage and Alice Braga as Cecilia Reyes. The film reshapes the comic book story with horror overtones. Instead of being educated at an upstate school the five young mutants are imprisoned in a secret asylum-like facility.
