We've been poking fun at the oft-delayed movie The New Mutants, and its prospects for missing yet another release date. However, 20th Century Studios and its partners have been turning up the volume on marketing efforts. The latest is a new poster touting the film's release in Dolby Cinema.
The X-Men spin-off was originally intended for release in 2018 and suffered numerous reschedulings since then. It seemed like the movie had come out of limbo when Disney put it on the April schedule this year. Then the world-wide pandemic disruption squelched it once more. Movie theaters are slowly re-opening this week making the film's current date of August 28 seeming more and more likely.
The New Mutants is directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in our Stars) from a script he co-wrote with Knate Lee, both self-described fans of the comics.
The cast includes Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik, Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane, Charlie Heaton as Cannonball, Henry Zaga as Sunspot, Blu Hunt as Mirage and Alice Braga as Cecilia Reyes. The film reshapes the comic book story with horror overtones. Instead of being educated at an upstate school the five young mutants are imprisoned in a secret asylum-like facility.
