New Mutants Tops Pandemic Box Office
20th Century Studios' long-delayed X-Men spin-off The New Mutants enjoyed a $3 million haul at the U.S. theatrical box office on Friday. Deadline reports that this reports a record high in the industry for the period muted by the global pandemic so far. It's still a low number for a Marvel mutant movie, but not the least bit surprising given how few theaters are actually open to the public nationwide. The film will server as a bellwether for how the industry proceeds with releasing movies through the end of the year, with larger tentpoles expected to be rescheduled into 2021.
The King's Man Get Bumped Into Next Year
The recent global disruption has hit film markets hard, causing production and release rescheduling on a regular basis. The latest victim is The King's Man, according to a report by Deadline. The movie was set to hit theaters on September 18, but is now settling into the February 26, 2021 timeslot. The King's Man is the third film in director Matthew Vaughn's Kingsman franchise, based on the comics by writer Mark Millar and artist Dave Gibbons. This one is a prequel, starring Ralph Fiennes, Gemma Arterton, Rhys Ifans and Tom Hollander.
The Kaiju Score Gets Marked For Film by Sony
Deadline reports that Sony Pictures has scooped up the film rights to the as-yet-unpublished AfterShock Comics title The Kaiju Score for development as a feature film. The comic, created by writer James Patrick and artist Rem Boo tells of the perfect heist which is complicated by an invasion of giant monsters around the mark. Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch will produce the film for Escape Artists, Tony Shaw for Sony and Lee Kramer and Jon Kramer for AfterShock.
Unikorn Indie Comic Gets Film Deal
Deadline reports that plans are afoot to adapt the Scout Comics title Unikorn into a feature film. The graphic novel was written by Don Handfield and Joshua Malkin who are also on tap to write the script for the film for Armory Films who financed he development of the book. Debbie Berman, one of Marvel's go-to film editors, will direct the adaptation.
The story focuses on a girl named Mae who inherits an old horse called Percy who has a strange growth on its head. Mae believes he is a Unikorn (a Unicorn with a broken horn) and sets out to protect him while searching for the horn.
