Right now, you're loving Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey. Here's a look back at her best bits from her debut movie Suicide Squad.
Suicide Squad is the 2016 movie set in the DC Extended Universe adapting the DC Comics title of the same name.
Following the death of Superman in the DCEU (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), a intelligence operative Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) assembles "Task Force X" a group of metahumans designed to step up to supernatural threats now that the world's mightiest protector is gone. Looking for subjects that are easily controlled Waller enlists powered criminals who are considered expendable (hence the Suicide aspect). The team consists of Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Deadshot (Will Smith), El Diablo (Jay Hernandez), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnouye-Agbaje), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney) and Slipknot (Adam Beach). Colonel Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) is placed in charge, with Waller's secret intention of enlisting his girlfriend, who is host to a demonic witch called Enchantress. However, she quickly loses control and Enchantress becomes the primary threat to the world's safety that the newly-formed Squad must defeat.
The movie was directed by David Ayer from his own script. The film was the recipient of negative reviews but did well at the box-office. It inspired an indirect sequel featuring Margot Robbie's character, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). The is also a direct sequel, directed by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy fame), simply called The Suicide Squad.
Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn) is the 2020 feature film that pulls together concepts from DC's Birds of Prey comic books and the 2016 Suicide Squad movie.
Margot Robbie reprises her role as Batman villain Harley Quinn, a character she played in Suicide Squad. In this take, Quinn breaks up with the Joker, prompting her considerable list of enemies to come gunning for her. Not the least of which is Roman Sionis (aka The Black Mask, played by Ewan McGregor) and his muscle Victor Zsasz (Chris Messina). Fortunately Quinn finds an unlikely group of allies in Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell, The Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), police detective Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) and a young street thief named Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco).
Cathy Yan directs the film from a script by Christina Hodson.
The movie was briefly retitled Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey due to its weak box office performance, but has retained it's original title in its home entertainment release.
