Before Joaquin Phoenix's ground-(and record)-breaking turn as the Joker, there was Jared Leto's full-method, deep interpretation in Suicide Squad. Leto and co-stars Margot Robbie, Jay Hernandez and Cara Delevingne, along with director David Ayer, producers Chuck Roven, Geoff Johns, Richard Suckle and Andy Horwitz and crew member Kate Hawley discuss that movie's take on the nightmare couple of Joker and Harley Quinn in this 15 minute behind-the-scenes feature from that home entertainment release of that movie.
James Gunn's sequel, The Suicide Squad, is tentatively scheduled for August 6, 2021.
Suicide Squad is the 2016 movie set in the DC Extended Universe adapting the DC Comics title of the same name.
Following the death of Superman in the DCEU (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), a intelligence operative Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) assembles "Task Force X" a group of metahumans designed to step up to supernatural threats now that the world's mightiest protector is gone. Looking for subjects that are easily controlled Waller enlists powered criminals who are considered expendable (hence the Suicide aspect). The team consists of Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Deadshot (Will Smith), El Diablo (Jay Hernandez), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnouye-Agbaje), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney) and Slipknot (Adam Beach). Colonel Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) is placed in charge, with Waller's secret intention of enlisting his girlfriend, who is host to a demonic witch called Enchantress. However, she quickly loses control and Enchantress becomes the primary threat to the world's safety that the newly-formed Squad must defeat.
The movie was directed by David Ayer from his own script. The film was the recipient of negative reviews but did well at the box-office. It inspired an indirect sequel featuring Margot Robbie's character, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). The is also a direct sequel, directed by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy fame), simply called The Suicide Squad.

The concept features a government-controlled task force made up of expendable super-villains. Margot Robbie returns to the sequel as Harley Quinn, with Idris Elba joining to fill the gap left by Will Smith. Elba will play Bloodsport.
James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) picked up directing and scripting duties when he was temporarily on the outs with Marvel/Disney. Production commenced on The Suicide Squad September 13th, 2019.
