A press release issued today by HBO Max indicates that the new streaming network has give a production commitment to J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot Productions to create a series based on DC Comics' Justice League Dark.
While the announcement wasn't specific about details, the comics feature an assemblage of supernatural and strange characters from the DCU. The lineup can include the likes Constantine, Swamp Thing, Etrigan the Demon, Deadman, Zatanna, Black Orchid, Shade the Changing Man, The Creeper and others. Several animated movies have been produced based on the notion including Justice League Dark and the upcoming Justice League Dark: Apokolips War.
"What an amazing start to our association with the wildly imaginative Bad Robot team under J.J. and Katie," Kevin Reilly, Chief Content Officer, HBO Max and President, TNT, TBS, & truTV said in the statement. "What could be better than an original J.J. idea and then Warner Bros. letting them loose on iconic I.P. from Stephen King and the DC Universe and to provide more must-have programming on HBO Max."
Justice League Dark will be executive produced by J.J. Abrams and its Head of Television, Ben Stephenson. Rachel Rusch Rich, Bad Robot’s Executive Vice President of Television will serve as a co-executive producer. Warner Bros. International Television Distribution will be the global distributor for the programs.
The comics based show is just one of three that HBO Max committed to with Bad Robot, the other two being Overlook, from the Stephen King universe and Duster, an original concept.
Warner Bros' HBO Max continues to leverage its DC Comics for TV content. They've previously announced a new live-action series for Green Lantern, an animated Aquaman and live-action series for the Vertigo title DMZ.
