Daily Blast: New Mutants Estimates $7 Million Weekend and Other Stories

New Mutants Estimates $7 Million Weekend

The New Mutants is looking at a weekend box office haul of about $7 million according to a report from Deadline. That's obviously a small number for a major studio release. Angel Has Fallen opened this time last year to 10 times as much.

The amount, however, is not bad considering that the Marvel-based 20th Century Studios release is screening in a U.S. theatrical market that has only about 62% of its venues open. Those theaters are following social-distancing restrictions which allow them to fill only 25-50% of the seats. We're really talking about a market that is only serving about 15-30% of its normal audience.

It's very likely the distributors will use this as a benchmark for releases through the end of 2020, and we may see some rescheduling of upcoming major releases.
