Extraction is the 2020 Netflix live-action feature film based on the 2014 graphic novel Ciudad by writer Ande Parks and artist Fernando Leon Gonzalez from a story by Joe and Anthony Russo. It is the first film in the Extraction film series.
Chris Hemsworth plays Tyler Rake, a hardened mercenary tasked with travelling to Bangladesh to recover the kidnapped son of an international crime lord. When it's clear he and the boy are pawns in a power struggle Rake's mission turns into a soul-searching race to survive.
The story for extraction was developed by the Russo brothers, when their star was on the rise for directing Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The story was first presented in comics form by Oni press, even as the film was in development. The Russos are producers on the film and Joe wrote the screenplay.
The movie was directed by Sam Hargrave, mostly known as a stunt coordinator, who worked with the Russos on all their Marvel films. It set records on Netflix for first day viewings, and immediately promoted plans for a sequel. It is followed by Extraction 2.
