AfterShock Comics Declares Bankruptcy
AfterShock Comics, who has made waves of late by publishing high-quality comic books and landing major motion picture deals, has filed for Bankruptcy.
Bleeding Cool details the filing in a report, including a tabulation of moneys owed to the creators that made the comics.
In the past few years, the publisher/media company has secured film deals for The Kaiju Score at Sony, and God Country and Party And Prey with Legendary Pictures. They also have a TV deals on Undone By Blood with Norman Reedus at AMC, and A Calculated Man at Hulu.
It's important to note that AfterShock filed for Chapter 11, which gives the company a chance to pause debt while it reorganizes into a more efficient entity. Marvel Comics declared Chapter 11 in 1996 and soon enjoyed its Hollywood revolution just years later.
As is often the case with indie comics publishers, the comics business is not well-structured for profits, but rather serves to generate intellectual property for other media. The model can work, but it fails more often than not, with Radical Publishing and CrossGen coming to mind.
