Thor is the 2011 Marvel Studios live-action feature film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. It is the first in the Thor film series.
Chris Hemsworth stars as the titular character, banished from his home world of Asgard by his father Odin (Anthony Hopkins) after nearly destroying a long-standing truce with the Frost Giants of Jotunheim. Although Thor was manipulated into the act by Loki (Tom Hiddleston), he is sent to Earth, stripped of the right to wield his hammer, Mjolnir, to learn humility. There he meets Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgard) who are studying Mjolnir. As S.H.I.E.L.D. forcibly takes possession of the hammer from Foster and Selvig, Loki sends The Destroyer to Earth to finish his brother. Kat Dennings also appears as Darcy Lewis.
Kenneth Branaugh directed the film from a script by Ashley Edward Miller, Zack Stentz and Don Payne.
The fourth movie produced by Marvel as an independent studio, Thor was a massive success, further cementing Marvel's reputation as hit-making machine. It also created an instant movie-star out of Hemsworth and presented a significant leveling-up for fan-favorite Hiddleston. The movie also introduced Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The movie was followed by Thor: The Dark World.
