A History of Violence is the New Line Cinema's 2005 live-action adaptation of the DC Comics/Paradox Press graphic novel of the same name by John Wagner and Vince Locke.
Viggo Mortensen stars as Tom Stall, a family man who runs a diner in a small town. When a chance encounter with a pair of murderous criminals puts Stall in the media spotlight as hero, dangerous people take notice. Dangerous people who have a history with Stall who force him to reckon with his criminal past in order to keep his family safe. Maria Bello, William Hurt and Ed Harris also star.

A History of Violence was a modest success at the box office, but a huge success with critics. It won numerous film awards from various bodies and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Writing and Best Supporting Actor.
