Viggo Mortensen stars as Tom Stall, a family man who runs a diner in a small town. When a chance encounter with a pair of murderous criminals puts Stall in the media spotlight as hero, dangerous people take notice. Dangerous people who have a history with Stall who force him to reckon with his criminal past in order to keep his family safe. Maria Bello, William Hurt and Ed Harris also star.
David Cronenberg directed from a screenplay by Josh Olson. A History of Violence was a modest success at the box office, but a huge success with critics. It won numerous film awards from various bodies and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Writing and Best Supporting Actor.
