Blue Beetle is the 2023 Warner Bros. Discovery live-action feature film based on the DC Comics character of the same name, specifically the Jaime Reyes version created by Keith Giffen, John Rogers and Cully Hamner.
Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero Blue Beetle.
Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai) is stars as Reyes, leading a cast that also includes Bruna Marquezine as Jenny Kord, Susan Sarandon as Victoria Kord, Raoul Max Trujillo (Mayans MC) as Carapax, the Indestructible Man.
Also cast are Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows) as Dr. Sanchez, Belissa Escobedo (American Horror Stories) as Milagro, George Lopez (Smurfs) as Uncle Rudy, Adriana Barraza (Rambo: Last Blood) as Nana, Damían Alcázar (Narcos) as Jaime's father, Damían Alcázar (Mayans M.C.) as Jaime's mother.
Jaime Reyes is the third character in comics to operate as Blue Beetle. The original version (created for the publisher Charlton Comics who later sold their library to DC Comics) was called Dan Garrett who was empowered by a mystical scarab. Through various comics storylines Garrett lost control of the Scarab and it eventually found its way to El Paso, Texas where it bonded with the teenaged Reyes. The Scarab is revealed to not be, in fact, a mystical Egyptian artifact but instead a piece of technology from an alien race.
Angel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings) is directing the film from a script by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Scarface). John Rickard is producing. Zev Forman is executive producing.
