Batwoman is the 2019 TV series developed for The CW based on the DC Comics character of the same name.
In season one, Ruby Rose starred as Kate Kane, a woman dishonorable discharge from the military leads her to brutal survival training, before eventually returning to Gotham city. There, her father Jacob Kane (Dougray Scott) runs Crows Private Security, a firm that has taken over law enforcement from the failed Gotham City Police Department in a city without a Batman. Kane discovers her cousin Bruce Wayne's secret life, a secret guarded by Luke Fox (Camrus Johnson) and assumes the role of Gotham's protector as Batwoman.
Rachel Skarsten stars as the series' primary villain Alice whose schemes against Kane and her father are very personal. Meagan Tandy appears as Sophie Moore, Kate's love from the Military who becomes the target of Alice's plans. Kate's extended family consists of wealthy socialite Catherine Hamilton-Kane (Elizabeth Anweis), wife of Jacob who bankrolls The Crows, and Mary (Nicole Kang) Kate's step-sister.
Season one of the show was successful enough that The CW quickly ordered a season two. However, in mid May 2020, Rose surprised everyone by resigning from the show citing stress.
Season two finds actress Javicia Leslie taking over the main role as the newly-created character Ryan Wilder. When Ryan discovers Kate Kane's Batsuit, and sees in it her chance to finally be powerful and no longer a victim as she survives in the tough streets of the city.
While Ryan goes rogue in the shadows, Gotham grapples with their missing hero, believing Batwoman has fled the city after a public stand-off with Commander Jacob Kane and the Crows. But Kate Kane's disappearance hits hardest at home where Jacob, Sophie, Luke, Mary and even Alice each struggle with the devastating news in their own way.
Meanwhile, the False Face Society tightens its grip on Gotham distributing a perilous new drug known as Snakebite, "Bruce Wayne" (Warren Christie) finds his way home to wreak havoc, Safiyah (Shivaani Ghai) surfaces with plans for revenge, and a new set of villains descends on the city.
As chaos and uncertainty proliferate, Ryan realizes how much the symbol on the suit means to Gotham, launching her on a personal journey that takes her from fledgling substitute to confident caped crusader, from living in her van with her plant to chasing villains in the Batmobile. Ryan Wilder becomes a very different Batwoman than Kate Kane - her own Batwoman - but with the same understanding of what it means to be a hero.
The was cancelled in May of 2022 after three seasons on the air.
