Batman & Robin is the 1997 live-action Warner Bros. feature film based on the DC Comics characters of the same name. It is a direct sequel to Batman Forever and the last film in the 1980s/1990s Batman film cycle.
Joel Schumacher returns to direct what is one of the most reviled superhero movies of modern times. With the success of the previous movie, the filmmakers here decided to go all-in on the lighter tone, carrying it all the way to the camp comedy last seen in the Batman TV series of the 1960s.
George Clooney took the lead role this time out, with Val Kilmer opting out. Chris O'Donnell returns as Robin. Filling out the cast are Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze, Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy, Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl and muscle-man Jeep Swenson as a truly terrible take on Bane.
The resulting film was critically panned and a box-office under-achiever as well. It was the last nail in the coffin for this version of Batman, who wouldn't surface again in film until Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins, some eight years later.
