Our stalwart heroes (Guillaume Canet and Gilles Lellouche) are enlisted to rescue a deposed Chinese empress (Julie Chen) and prevent César (Vincent Cassel) from overthrowing the kingdom in this trailer for Astérix & Obélix: The Middle Kingdom. See it in French theaters February 1.
Astérix & Obélix: The Middle Kingdom is the 2023 live-action Pathé feature film based on the comic series The Adventures of Asterix, created by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo. It is the fifth film in the live-action Asterix film series.
Guillaume Canet is set to star as Astérix and also direct the film. Gilles Lellouche will replace Gerard Depardieu in the role of Obélix. The movie will also star Vincent Cassel as Cesar and Marion Cotillard as Cleopatra. Also appearing are Ramzy Bedia, Julie Chen, Linh-Dan Pham, Pierre Richard and soccer star Zlatan Ibrahimovic as Oneofus.
Synopsis: "It’s the year 50 BC. The Empress of China has just been imprisoned following a coup d’état incited by Deng Tsin Qin, a traitorous prince.
"Helped by Finalthesis, the Phoenician merchant, and her faithful bodyguard Mai Wei, the Empress’ only daughter Princess Sass-Yi flees to Gaul to ask for help from two valiant warriors Asterix and Obelix, who are endowed with superhuman strength thanks to their magic potion.
"Our two inseparable heroes gladly accept to help the Princess save her mother and free her country. And thus begins a great voyage and adventure on the road to China.
"But Caesar and his powerful army, thirsty for a new conquest, are also heading toward the Middle Kingdom..."
Philippe Mechelen and Julien Hervé wrote the script.
The film was previously referred to as Asterix & Obelix: Silk Road.
