Director James Gunn tweeted out the new logo treatment for his upcoming sequel The Suicide Squad. The movie, which sees most of the original cast returning (sans Will Smith), has been slated for an August 6, 2021 release. Given the recent havoc played on film production and release schedules, its uncertain that the date will hold. However, Gunn promises a major update on August 22 during the DC FanDome event.
The Suicide Squad is Warner Bros' live-action sequel to the 2016 film Suicide Squad, based on the DC Comics team of the same name.
The concept features a government-controlled task force made up of expendable super-villains. Margot Robbie returns to the sequel as Harley Quinn, with Idris Elba joining to fill the gap left by Will Smith. Elba will play Bloodsport.
James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) picked up directing and scripting duties when he was temporarily on the outs with Marvel/Disney. Production commenced on The Suicide Squad September 13th, 2019.
In addition to Robbie and Elba, the cast includes Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman and Jai Courtney, reprising their roles as Amanda Waller, Rick Flag and Captain Boomerang respectively. Newcomers in the expansive ensemble include Nathan Fillion, John Cena, David Dastmalchian, Joaquin Cosio, Mayling Ng, Flula Borg, Sean Gunn, Juan Diego Botto, Storm Reid, Pete Davidson, Taika Waititi, Alice Braga, Steve Agee, Tinashe Kajese, Daniela Melchior, Peter Capaldi, Julio Ruiz, Jennifer Holland and Michael Rooker.
