Spider-Man is the 2002 Sony Pictures Entertainment live-action feature film adaptation of the Marvel Comics character of the same name. It is the first film in the first Spider-Man film series.
Tobey Maguire stars as Peter Parker, who is bitten by a genetically altered spider while touring the labs of the bio-tech firm Oscorp. Oscorp is owned by Norman Osborn (Willem Dafoe), father to Peter's best friend Harry (James Franco). Peter and Norman's fates become intertwined as Peter receives super powers from the bite, while Oscorp teeters on the bring of financial ruin. Under pressure to deliver on his military contracts, Norman injects himself with his enhancement formula and becomes super-human and super insane. He wears Oscorp military tech and becomes the Green Goblin. When he realizes that his nemesis, Spider-Man is actually Parker, a plot unfolds to terrorize Peter's friends and family, including the love of his life, Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst).
Sam Raimi directed the movie from a script by David Koepp. The movie was wildly successful with fans and critics, who lauded it's good humor, romance and emotional richness, living alongside with spectacular action and effects. Spider-Man shattered box office records and is seen as a significant leveling up for Marvel as a cinematic force.
