The Spider-Man movies are beloved by all, except for CinemaSins, who are here to point out every flaw from the Raimi series, the Amazing reboot, the MCU cycle and Into the Spider-Verse. It's a two and a half hour, super-critical supercut of Everything Wrong!
Spider-Man is the 2002 Sony Pictures Entertainment live-action feature film adaptation of the Marvel Comics character of the same name. It is the first film in the first Spider-Man film series.
Tobey Maguire stars as Peter Parker, who is bitten by a genetically altered spider while touring the labs of the bio-tech firm Oscorp. Oscorp is owned by Norman Osborn (Willem Dafoe), father to Peter's best friend Harry (James Franco). Peter and Norman's fates become intertwined as Peter receives super powers from the bite, while Oscorp teeters on the bring of financial ruin. Under pressure to deliver on his military contracts, Norman injects himself with his enhancement formula and becomes super-human and super insane. He wears Oscorp military tech and becomes the Green Goblin. When he realizes that his nemesis, Spider-Man is actually Parker, a plot unfolds to terrorize Peter's friends and family, including the love of his life, Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst).
Sam Raimi directed the movie from a script by David Koepp. The movie was wildly successful with fans and critics, who lauded it's good humor, romance and emotional richness, living alongside with spectacular action and effects. Spider-Man shattered box office records and is seen as a significant leveling up for Marvel as a cinematic force.
Spider-Man 2 is the 2004 sequel to Spider-Man, both based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name.
The movie finds Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) trying to live up to his responsibilities of being a super-hero, at the cost of his personal relationships with Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst) and Harry Osborn (James Franco). He meets Otto Octavius (Alfred Molina) a nuclear scientist who becomes a mentor of sorts, before suffering a catastrophic lab accident. Now, Octavius' lab harness equipped with four artificially intelligent tentacles is fused to him permanently. Further their AI minds have a direct link to his, causing a shift in his character. He's now stealing to fund further iterations of he dangerous experiments.
Sam Raimi returned to direct the sequel from a script by Alvin Sargent. The film scored well with fans and critics alike and is considered by some to be the best Spider-Man movie to date. It also did great at the box office, breaking a number of records. It was followed by one sequel, Spider-Man 3.
Spider-Man 3 is the 2007 live-action Sony Pictures Entertainment feature film based on the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man. It is a direct sequel to Spider-Man 2 and the third and final film in the first Spider-Man film series.
The movie represents an unfortunate misfire in the otherwise excellent and game-changing cycle of films by director Sam Raimi.
This one finds Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) struggling with the responsibilities of being a hero, a strange black ooze that forms a new costume, a new revelation that his Uncle Ben's killer is actually still at large as the super-villain Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), a new rival / villain in the form of jealous photographer (and soon-to-be Venom) Eddie Brock (Topher Grace) and a disturbing regression into mental illness for his friend Harry Osborn (James Franco).
It's a lot and the movie couldn't hold up under the strain of so many incongruous plot-lines.
The critical failure of the film all but ended this first series of Spider-Man movies. For a time it seemed that Raimi had succeeded in pressing Sony Pictures Entertainment to give him a chance to make a fourth film to end the series on a high note, but that effort was halted in mid-development, paving the way for a reboot with The Amazing Spider-Man film series.
However, fans did get some closure on this version of the character over a decade later when Tobey revisited the role for Spider-Man: No Way Home.
The Amazing Spider-Man is Sony Pictures Entertainment's 2012 live-action feature film, starting a new series of movies based on the Marvel Comics character.
Andrew Garfield steps into the role of Peter Parker in yet another retelling of the web-slinger's origin story. A high-school age Parker, once again, encounters a genetically-altered spider while touring Oscorp research facilities. This time around Peter is smitten with Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), also a science nerd. The villain here is Oscorp researcher Dr. Curt Conners (Rhys Ifans) whose tissue-regeneration experiments transform him into the Lizard. Driven mad, Conners hopes to unleash his transmogrifying formula on all of New York City to cure humanity of its weaknesses. Also cast in this film are Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben, Sally Field as Aunt May, Denis Leary as George Stacy. The movie also attempted to delve into the mystery of Peter's orphan status, casting Campbell Scott as father Richard Parker, seen in flashback.
Marc Webb directed from a script by James Venderbilt, Alvin Sargent and Steve Kloves. The film was a moderate hit at the box office and did reasonably well with critics. There was a sense that the movie was just retreading ground already crawled by the Sam Raimi films, and did little to strike a new direction. It spawned a sequel in 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is Sony Pictures Entertainment's 2014 live-action feature film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. It is a direct sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man and the second movie in the second Spider-Man film series.
Andrew Garfield returns as Peter Parker, two years after the events of the first film. Peter has attempted to distance himself from Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), honoring the dying wish of her father in the previous chapter. Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan) is introduced as an old friend of Peter's who has returned from studying abroad. At Oscorb, Harry discovers he is suffering the same genetic illness as his father and the best hope lies in the blood of Parker. Harry becomes increasingly unhinged and paranoid and eventually subjects himself to an experimental formula which transforms him into the Green Goblin. At the same time, an OsCorp janitor named Max Dillion (Jamie Foxx) falls into a vat of genetically enhanced eels and is invested with out-of-control electrical powers.
The cast also includes Sally Field, Campbell Scott, Embeth Davidtz, Colme Feore and Paul Giamatti.
Marc Webb directed from a script by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Jeff Pinkner.
The film was weak at the box office and received lukewarm review from critics. While the story of the film continued to build on a long story arc concerning Peter's parents, the poor performance of the film put the brakes on Sony's plans for sequels.
However, Garfield and Foxx would reprise their roles in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Jon Watts directed the movie from a script by a fleet of writing teams. The movie was a unique experiment in studio cooperation, with Marvel having signed away the film rights for Spider-Man to Sony Pictures Entertainment long before they became a powerhouse movie studio. The opportunity to bring their flagship character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe turned out to be a no-brainer for both studios, giving Sony massive success at the box office.
The film was followed by Holland's portrayal of Peter Parker in Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame and the direct sequel Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Following the events of Avengers: Endgame Peter Parker (Tom Holland) struggles to resume as normal a life as a Spider-Man can lead. A class trip to Paris, where Peter hopes to get closer to MJ (Zendaya), is interrupted by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and a new, trans-dimensional superhero called Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal). Long-time Spidey readers already know there's more to this Mysterio than meets the eye. The movie also stars Jacob Batalon, Marisa Tomei, Jon Favreau and Cobie Smulders.
Spider-Man: Far From Home is directed by Joh Watts and written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.
