Disney+ has big things in store for 2023.
In addition to the streaming debut of Black Panther: Wakand Forever, this sizzle reel gives us a preview of Marvel Studios' Secret Invasion and Loki season two. We also get a look at the comic-based series American Born Chinese.
Secret Invasion is slated to arrive in spring. Loki 2 happens in the summer.
So far Disney hasn't projected a release date for American Born Chinese, although the inclusion here tells us it will be early in the year.
Secret Invasion is the 2023 Marvel Studios live-action TV series for Disney+, based on the Marvel Comics of the same name.
Actor Samuel L. Jackson is set to reprise the role of Nick Fury, which he has played in numerous Marvel Cinematic Universe films, as well as on the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series. He'll be joined by Ben Mendelsohn as the Skrull Talos, who first appeared in Captain Marvel.
The cast also includes Kingsley Ben-Adir, Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, Killian Scott, Christopher McDonald, Cobie Smulders and Don Cheadle
We last saw Fury and Talos in Spider-Man: Far From Home where it was revealed the S.H.I.E.L.D. director is alive and well and living on some sort of space craft while Talos impersonated him on Earth. Many speculated at the time that this sets up S.W.O.R.D., an offshoot of S.H.I.E.L.D. that protects the planet from extraterrestrial threats (although that organization was featured in WandaVision with a very different mission).
Kyle Bradstreet (Mr. Robot) is writing and executive producing the show.
Loki is the Marvel Studios' 2021 live-action TV series for Disney+ based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name.
Tom Hiddleston reprises the role he originated in the Thor film series and continued in multiple Avengers movies. Though the character died several times (and with seeming finality in Avengers: Infinity War) fans know he had an opportunity for further mischief when, in Avengers: Endgame a time-travelling Tony Stark allows a past version of Loki to steal the tesseract. This act alters the fabric of reality bringing him into the crosshairs of Time Keepers, a bureaucratic organization tasked with keeping the timeline intact. Mobius (Owen Wilson) enlists the now-captive-and-not-to-be-trusted Loki in a mission to restore the timeline and set things right.
In addition to Hiddleston and Wilson, actors Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Sophia Di Martino, Wunmi Mosaku and Richard E. Grant are among the cast.
Kate Herron, best known for Netflix's Sex Education, handles directing duties. Michael Waldron (HarmonQuest) serves as the head writer of the show.
American Born Chinese is the 2023 Disney+ TV series based on the graphic novel of the same name by Gene Luen Yang.
In October of 2021 new broke that Disney+ had ordered the property straight to series. Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) is set to direct and executive produce the series. Kelvin Yu (Westworld) writer, showrunner and executive producer. Brother Charles Yu (also of Westworld) is writing and executive producing. Melvin Mar, Jake Kasdan, Asher Goldstein and Yang are also executive producers.
Ben Wang is set to play the protagonist Jin Wang, an immigrant from Taiwan struggling to find his identity in America. Jim Liu plays Wei-Chen, Ben's best friend. Sydney Taylor is cast as Amelia, Jin's crush. Daniel Wu is set to play the mythic figure of The Monkey King, on a quest to America to find his son. Ke Huy Quan is cast as Freddy Wong. Michelle Yeoh has the prominent role of Guanyin, the aunt of Wei-Chen, who has a secret identity as, "the all-powerful Buddhist bodhisattva of Compassion." Yeo Yann Yann and Chin Han plays Jin's parents.
The publisher of the graphic novel provides this synopsis: "American Born Chinese tells the story of three apparently unrelated characters: Jin Wang, who moves to a new neighborhood with his family only to discover that he's the only Chinese-American student at his new school; the powerful Monkey King, subject of one of the oldest and greatest Chinese fables; and Chin-Kee, a personification of the ultimate negative Chinese stereotype, who is ruining his cousin Danny's life with his yearly visits. Their lives and stories come together with an unexpected twist in this action-packed modern fable. American Born Chinese is an amazing ride, all the way up to the astonishing climax."
The show is in development with Disney Branded Television and 20th Television.
