Thor: The Dark World is Marvel Studios' 2013 live-action sequel to Thor, both based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. It is the second in the Thor film series.
Chris Hemsworth returns to the role of the Thunder God, this time finding himself in conflict with the Dark Elf Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) who aims to wage war on Asgard, and all of reality, using a mystical weapon called the Aether. It would be revealed that the Aether is one of the Infinity Stones, which figure into the overarching Marvel storyline.
Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Kat Dennings, Stellan Skarsgard and Idris Elba are among the many supporting players returning from the first movie.
Alan Taylor directs this time out from a script by Christopher Yost and Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely.
The movie was followed by Thor: Ragnarok.
