The New Mutants is the 2020 20th Century Studios live-action feature film based on the Marvel Comics title of the same name. It is a spinoff of the X-Men film series.
Introduced in 1982, the comics ushered in a new generation of students for Professor Xavier's school for the gifted, bringing the concept back to its roots of teenage outcasts struggling with emotional and physiological changes.
The film recasts the story with horror overtones, imprisoning five young mutants in a secret asylum-like facility. The cast includes Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik, Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane, Charlie Heaton as Cannonball, Henry Zaga as Sunspot, Blu Hunt as Mirage and Alice Braga a Ceclia Reyes.
Josh Boone (The Fault in our Stars) directs from a script he co-wrote with Knate Lee, both self-described fans of the comics.
The film was developed prior to the 20th Century Fox merger with Disney. It was plagued by release problems with the first scheduled date set April of 2018. Even after the studio began promoting the film with trailers, It was bumped to February 2019, supposedly to make room for Deadpool 2. It was rescheduled again towards August 2019, reportedly to prevent it from conflicting with Dark Phoenix. Once Disney had fully absorbed Fox, the studio announced a firm release date of April 3 of 2020. Unfortunately, the global pandemic and theatrical shut-downs prevented that date from holding. The movie was rescheduled once more to August 28, 2020 and the film finally arrived in theaters that day.
