Monkeybone is the 2001 20th Century Fox live-action feature film adaptation of the graphic novel Dark Town by Kaja Blackley.
Brendan Fraser plays Stu Miley, a cartoonist who has created a comic strip character called Monkeybone which is about to become an animated TV series. Unfortunately Stu crashes his car and ends in a coma, while his psyche is taken to Dark Town, a place of surreal characters of nightmare and imagination including Monkeybone himself. As Stu attempts to escape Dark Town fails, Monkeybone slips out into the real world in his place, inhabiting his human body, while Stu remains trapped.
Also starring are Bridget Fonda, Whoopi Goldberg, Rose McGowan, Giancarlo Esposito and Chris Kattan.
The film was directed by stop-motion animator Henry Selick (A Nightmare Before Christmas) from a script by Sam Hamm. The movie was a box office bomb and failed to please critics as well.
