The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat is a 1974 animated feature film based on the underground comics of Robert Crumb. The movie is a sequel to the successful art-house movie Fritz The Cat.
An anthology of stories from Crumbs comics, this sequel find Fritz trapped in an unhappy marriage and looking to reclaim his earlier lives as a drugged-out, sex-obsessed cat on the streets. The film became the first American animated movie to receive an R rating.
Robert Taylor directed from a script he co-wrote with Fred Halliday and Eric Monte. Unlike the previous film, this one does not use the source comics to any great extent.
The film is less well-regarded than its predecessor and some feel that the corporate drive to reduce the edgier parts of the comics likely contributed to its lower status.
