Fritz the Cat (1972 Film): Theatrical Release

Fritz the Cat is the 1972 animated feature film based on the underground comic strip by Robert Crumb.

Animation icon Ralph Bakshi directs this adult film featuring an anthropomorphic cat in the big city relentlessly seeking sex, drugs and a good time of any sort. The stories of the film drew directly from Crumb's comics and kept much of the dialogue. Initially developed by Warner Bros, the studio eventually withdrew their backing due to the movie's sexual content.  The movie earned the distinction of being the first American animated movie to receive an X Rating from the MPAA.

The movie went on to succeed on the world market, making something like 10 times its budget in receipts. The film is followed by a direct-to-video sequel, The Nine Lives of Fritz The Cat.
