Captain America: Civil War is the 2016 Marvel Studios live-action feature film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. It follows Captain America: The Winter Soldier as the third film in the Captain America MCU film series. It also follows the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man.
Age of Ultron, which saw a massive battle that resulted in a catastrophic loss of life. The world government steps in to assume control of the superheroes leading to a rift between Captain America (Chris Evans) who rejects their authoritarianism and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr) who agrees that regulation is needed. The assassination of the King of Wakanda escalates tensions as Cap's former partner the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) is blamed for the crime.
The movie is an intense Avengers-adjacent film that also stars Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie, Don Cheadle, Jeremy Renner, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Rudd and Emily VanCamp reprising past superhero roles. It also introduces Chadwick Boseman's Black Panther and Tom Holland's Spider-Man to the MCU.
Captain America: Civil War cements the reputations of directors Anthony and Joe Russo as the leading creative voices in the MCU with a movie that veers deftly between crowd-pleasing action and emotional resonance. Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely wrote the script.
