Annie is the 2014 feature film adaptation of the Broadway musical of the same name, both of which are based on Harold Gray's classic comic strip Little Orphan Annie.
Quvenzhané Wallis takes on the role of Annie, an orphan living in the oppressive home of Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz), a cantankerous woman bilking the foster care system and treating her many foster children with disdain. She has a chance encounter with the super-wealthy William Stacks (Jamie Foxx) who finds he's enjoying massive positive buzz thanks to a viral video in which he helps the girl save a dog. His publicist Guy Danlily (Bobby Cannavale) tells him to keep the kid around and she becomes fast friends with Stacks' assistant Grace (Rose Byrne). Once again, it's up to the lovable orphan girl to win over the aloof billionaire and find a home with him.
The movie was directed by Will Gluck from a script he co-wrote with Aline Brosh McKenna. The movie modernizes the now-dated story, including an update to the original songs from the Broadway version. The film underperformed at the box office. It also received low marks from critics who frequently cited the synthetic, modern revamp of the songs.
