The fictional superhero team Guardians of the Galaxy first appeared in Marvel Super-Heroes in January, 1969. They also appeared sporadically in several Marvel titles such as Marvel Two-in-One #4-5 and Giant Size Defenders. They often are seen battling the alien Badoon, with support from other heroes such as Thing and Captain America.

The Guardians eventually starred in a self-titled comic that spanned 62 issues in the early 1990s. After his, a second volume was published in May of 2008 and features a different team drawn from another storyline called Annihilation: Conquest. Then in 2014 Guardians 3000 came along which starred the original Guardians.

Marvel Universe

The story takes place in the 31st century in an alternate time-line in the Marvel Universe, which is called Earth-691.  One of the core members of the team is Major Vance Astro (also known as Major Victory). This was an astronaut from the 20th century Earth that travelled to Alpha Centauri in suspended animation. Shouldn’t we be traveling to Mars in this way by now? If you are aware of the hero known as Justice, then you might be thinking of Vance Astrovik, the future alternate universe counterpart.

Other members of the squad include a soldier from Jupiter, Yondu Udonta, and Martinex T’Naga. Each of them share the common trait of being “the last of their kind,” which prompts them to collaborate as a team against the alien race Badoon that is attempting to overtake the Earth’s solar system. How exciting!

More recruits come aboard during the war against the Badoon, including Aleta and Starhawk, Nikki from Mercury, and several heroes mentioned previously from the 20th century timeline.

When the Badoon are eventually defeated, they find themselves up against a new enemy known as Korvac who was apparently a creation of the Badoon. Thor makes an appearance to help defeat Korvac in the 31st century, however the Guardians end up following Korvac back to 20th century Earth where they team up with the Avengers for the ultimate showdown.

Years later the Guardians return and take on even more member such as Skrull Replica, Inhuman Talon, the second Yellowjacket, and Simon Williams (Hollywood, Man of Wonder). Martinex eventually wants to recruit even more team members, so he ends up leaving with a mission to form another unit known as Galactic Guardians.
